1961 model
In early 1961 (April) , Volkswagen officially announced that a new model, released 1500 Notchback (VW1500) engine, 1493cc with side-draft 32 PHN carb, 6 Volt electrics, side parking lamps, veriable speed wipers, opening rear side windows etc.
1962 model
The 1500 sedan was followed quickly by the 1500 Variant(Squareback)
in 1962.1963 model
Add released steel sliding roof model in 1963.
1964 model
Released 1500S (Twin carb 32 PDSIT 2/3) available either 1500N (side-
draft 32 PHN carb) or 1500S. Also released 1500E same as S models have extra chrome trim on side front and rear, wheel trims, passenger out side door-rock, round type front flashers.
1500N, 1500S, 1500E more details as follows;
1500N;
Side-draft carb 54 bhp "bullets" type front indicator, short painted rear reflector, painted vent window frame, short arm-rests, single speed wipers, without chromes reflector housing, clock, second sunvisor, passenger outside door lock.
1500S
Extra chrome trim on side front and rear, wheel trims, passenger out side door-
lock, chromed reflector housing, opening rear side windows, clock, door pockets, side arm rests and two rear ashtrays, push-button control switch panel, second sun visor, rear interior lights.
1500E
The small number of production. Same as 1500N engine with 1500S exterior and interior.
1965 model
Wipers and headlights switch etc small modified.
1966 model
Fastback introduced as 1600TL. Models now 1600A and 1600L Notchback, 1600TL Fastback, 1600A and 1600L Variant (Squareback) 1600cc engine; 54bhp. Disc front brake system, 4 lug stud, long type front hood molding, changed arm rested form. 1966 model is the only one to have door panel, switches, wind regulator handle etc.
1967 model
12 volt electrics models gain dual circuit brake system. 1967 model is the only one to have door lock system, wipers, flexible plastic knobs on switches (headlights etc) and vent-wing catches, front seat bracket release knobs, trigger door handle etc.
1968 model
External fuel filler location changed from inside front hood to right fender. modified wipers, headlights switch knobs, ventilation switch, vent wind lock, door handle, changed front low back seats to front high back seat. Automatic option, in 1968 models have fuel injection introduced, double joint rear axle, internal filler release front hood lock release lever switch moved to inside glove box area. U.S.export model have chromed bullets indicators and chromed short rear reflectors.
1969 model
All models equipped electronic fuel injection and double joint rear axle. Locked fuel filler flap.
1970 model
Long-fronted models introduced ; extra luggage space, euro-bumpers (press bumpers), larger front flashers and rear light units.
1971 model
Fresh air box ventilation system. Reduced ash tray size, folding rear seats.
1972 model
Increased brake pad area with early 411 calipers, larger bore single-piece
damper / tailpipe, changed gray-faced instruments to black-faced instruments, wash-wipe lever on column with single wipe option, changed chromed indicator base to aluminium painted indicators.
1973 model
Front seat form changed. Black wiper arms and blade holders. No further changes for last 1973 production stop models.
